SUMMARY OF THE POSITION
Rank the Vote NYC has an immediate need to begin an aggressive RCV education campaign in Queens in anticipation of the city’s first RCV special elections, in February and March 2021, and the citywide June primary. The first RCV election will be on Tuesday, February 2nd and the second will be on an as yet to be determined date in roughly mid-March.

The first RCV election will be a special election to fill the vacated seat for Queens City Council District 24. The Council District encompasses Kew Gardens Hills, Pomonok, Electchester, Fresh Meadows, Hillcrest, Jamaica Estates, Briarwood, Parkway Village, Jamaica Hills, and Jamaica. The district currently has 89,851 registered voters. The second RCV election will be a special election to fill the vacated seat for Queens City Council District 31 which includes Arverne, Brookville, Edgemere, Far Rockaway, Laurelton, Rosedale, and Springfield Gardens.

This position will require the organizer to be laser-focused on the communities and districts affected by the two special elections (~70% of the time) and conduct other educational events throughout the borough through March (~30% of time). The organizing work will immediately shift to an expansive borough-wide lens after the special elections to prepare for the June primary. Our education program will serve two purposes:

  • Educate Queens voters on the mechanics and value proposition of RCV

  • Grow and diversify our network of supporters

Working under the direction of the program’s Education Campaign Program Director, the RCV Education Organizer will:

  • Develop a district-specific and Queens education and outreach strategy. In consultation with the Program Director, will develop a road map for meeting the following goals from hire date to the special election:

    • 1 townhall per City Council district

    • At least 2-3 educational outreach events per week

    • Develop & execute outreach plans that specifically target NYCHA facilities, faith communities & senior centers.

  • Participate in collaborative discussions regarding tactics and materials for education & outreach. Assist with materials development as needed.

  • Recruit, train and deploy borough-based volunteers.

  • Assist with planning for field operations, virtual and in-person) once voting commences. Our in-person field program is wholly dependent on public health guidance for COVID at that time.

  • Communications: Participate with the team in drafting emails, flyers, social media posts and events.

  • In consultation with Field Director, the organizer will develop a tracker that captures all outreach events and target lists.

The position requires a well-organized, detail-oriented self-starter who is calm under pressure and comfortable in a high energy environment; must have the initiative to take on complicated projects and learn new things independently.
