Tremaine Wright Announces New Endorsement for New York State Senate
Eleanor’s Legacy is the largest statewide women’s political organization in New York, building a new generation of pro-choice Democratic women leaders
Brooklyn, NY - Tremaine Wright, candidate for New York State Senate, today announced a new endorsement from Eleanor’s Legacy, the statewide women’s political organization.
“Every day we are seeing the difference it makes when women lead. In the New York State Assembly, Tremaine has authored legislation to protect homeowners facing default or foreclosure, prohibit discrimination based on natural hair styles or traits associated with race, protect adult home residents, and allow individuals to earn college credits while incarcerated. Tremaine Wright leaves no one behind when she goes to Albany. We are proud to endorse her and to increase the number of Brooklyn women in the State Senate,” said Brette McSweeney, president of Eleanor’s Legacy.
“I am honored to have the support of Eleanor’s Legacy during this campaign. The organization is committed to building a new generation of New York women leaders. As the only woman in the race to be the next State Senator in the 25th District, I am dedicated to leading on the issues that matter most to women and their families. As a former small business owner, I am a champion for women to own and live their dreams. Currently, four of the nine Senators representing Brooklyn are women. The time is now for Brooklyn women to take their seat at the table,” said Tremaine Wright.
Wright, candidate for the 25th State Senate district, is running to succeed Sen. Velmanette Montgomery, who announced in January her retirement from the New York State Senate. The district includes parts of Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill, Gowanus, Red Hook, Ft. Green, Prospect Heights, Ocean Hill, Crown Heights, and Bed-Stuyvesant. Tremaine Wright is the only woman in the primary for the 25th State Senate district.
Wright is running to preserve the rich legacy of community and to build a strong foundation for the future. Wright has received endorsements from Senator Velmanette Montgomery, former Assembly member Hon. Annette M. Robinson, and each Assembly Member representing the 25th district: Assembly Member Felix Ortiz, Assembly member Jo Anne Simon, Assembly Member Walter Mosley, Assembly Member Latrice Walker and Assembly member Diana Richardson.
A native of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Wright is an attorney and a former small business owner. She is an organizer of the Tompkins Avenue Merchants Association, a volunteer attorney for VOLS and the New York City Bar Association's Neighborhood Entrepreneur Law Project; and for 10 years she owned and operated Common Grounds A Neighborhood Coffee House. Wright is currently serving in her second term in the New York State Assembly and is Chair of the Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic & Asian Legislative Caucus.
The Democratic primary election will take place on Tuesday, June 23. Early voting is currently scheduled to begin on June 13th.
